Alberta Heritage Days!

This weekend across Alberta, people will be experiencing, tasting, listening and viewing the roots of Alberta's history. The Peace Country is hosting fairs, rodeos, art and museum exhibits and tours as ways to entice us to explore our heritage and our natural environment. With this in mind, our Museum is offering tours of the St. Augustine Mission Church and Cemetery between 1 and 4pm on August 3rd. Pack a picnic lunch, take a drive along the historic Shaftesbury Trail (Highway 684) and stop at the little church to learn about the early agricultural and spiritual life at the mission. Then on August 4th meet us at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery at 10:30am for a tour that will remind you of veterans from World War I, Councillors and newspaper editors of the past and firefighters who once protected our community, all in commemoration of 100 years as Peace River Crossing. Later the same afternoon, a walking tour of the downtown area, starting at the Museum at 1pm, will highlight some milestones in our 100 year history. these tours will go, rain or shine, so do come prepared. As we celebrate our 100 years as a community, we are reminded of our own role today in making Peace River a fine community to live in!

Walking Tours to celebrate Heritage Day - August 5, 2013

Heritage Day is August 5th, 2013! This annual Albertan holiday was created in 1974 by the Alberta Government in order to celebrate the cultural heritage of Alberta and all of its people. This day is celebrated each year on the first Monday in August.
Staff at the Museum and Archives are celebrating our local heritage in style, by offering three separate Historic Walking Tours for Heritage Day. You can learn so much by taking a stroll - things you may walk by everyday but never think twice about! Now, you get the chance to get some of those questions answered by joining us on one or all of these historic walks.
The schedule is as follows:
11am   Learn about the Pioneers of the Peace with a tour of Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.  Meet at the cemetery.
1:30pm   The town’s built heritage will be the focus of a stroll along the historic streetscape of 102 Street.  Meet at the Museum.

1 - 4pm   Interpretive tours of the NAR Station - drop by anytime.
Dress for the weather as tours will go rain or shine! No pre-registration required.

For more information on the tours, please contact the Museum at 780-624-4261 or www.peacerivermuseum.blogspot.com or www.peaceriver.ca

Superb Heritage Day at the Museum

Glorious summer weather, entertaining guides and adventurous walkers all helped to make the Museum's Heritage Day Celebrations a marked success.

An excellent turnout of curious ramblers were treated to fact and folklore provided by our fantastic guides: Beth, Laura and Adele. Each brought the river, hills and downtown of Peace River to life, much to the delight of our intrepid visitors.

A special congratulations to the lucky winner of our draw, Debora Reath, who was the recipient of an adventure backpack supplied by the staff of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development.
After this week's positive results, the Museum is considering offering more guided walking tours throughout the year and possibly publishing brochures to conduct your own self-guided walking tours through Peace River. Let us know what you think at Museum@peaceriver.net or in the comments field.
And a big thanks to all our Walkers and Talkers!
